Urban areas have become complex and fragmented; time has become precious, attention spans have shortened and space has become a commodity. We find ourselves having to manoeuvre through labyrinths and territories marked by boundaries that establish where we can and cannot go, which spaces are public or private, and where we enter and exit.
App-based delivery services, taxis and digital platforms rely entirely on GPS, to the point that it is difficult to imagine life without knowing exactly where we are 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This project is a personal reminder that it is okay to get lost sometimes – after all, we all belong to the same Pale Blue Dot.
Sameer Kulavoor’s practice emerges from a way of seeing and decoding the ever-changing metropolis, and from a reflection on what it means to exist within it, capturing its ephemerality, idiosyncrasies and multiplicity. With over two decades of experience in art and design, Kulavoor is drawn to investigating patterns, peculiarities and anomalies in our complex landscape. Behind his playful compositions lies a sincere reflection on urban life and the impact of time, culture, politics and socio-economic conditions on our built environment.
